The Certina Newport was introduced as the brand’s new flagship at the European Watch and Jewellery Fair in 1981. It marked a turning point for Certina, which sought to combine the robustness of its renowned DS (Double Security) concept with a much slimmer and more refined aesthetic. The Newport collection fits within Certina’s long tradition (founded in 1888 in Grenchen) of producing reliable and sporty watches. While the brand is well known for its diving and expedition models of the 1950s and 1960s, the Newport represented an adaptation of this expertise to the more urban and technological market of the 1980s, just before the brand was integrated into the Swatch Group in 1983. The turtle, a symbol of the brand since the 1960s to illustrate the strength of its shell, now also represents its partnership with the Sea Turtle Conservancy for ocean conservation.
